Narbonne! 😍
I have recently finished this watercolour commission which was a surprise gift for a milestone birthday 🖼🎁🎈
It is extremely special to be trusted with a happy memory and to transfer that onto paper for safekeeping. Finally handing the painting over was quite an emotional moment for us both ❤️

Thinking back ...

Yesterday I was asked to list someone as an inspiration but wow that's a challenge... there are just too many wonderful artists & urban sketchers to mention! Thinking back though, it is probably my grandfather - who shared his passion and several nuggets of his knowledge, that got me started with watercolour sketching and the inspiration to just keep going ...

He (Alan) aspired to qualify as an architect, but WWII had other ideas and he never realised that dream. After returning from Burma he pursued his passion for drawing through a prolific amount of work and set up an art society in Suffolk. With his architectural style and love of plein air painting he was the classic urban sketcher of his day.

I have very few photos of him (the pre-digital age), but I do have several of his paintings and sketchbooks. I find it fascinating to notice how my sketching style is actually - and unintentionally - quite similar to his.

I think he'd be delighted to see what I do now, and to know I'm still practicing the techniques he showed me all those decades ago. So I'll keep going.... ️😊

Tuesdays are Zoom days and yesterday it was all about geraniums, a symbol of happiness and positivity (also a wonderful plant for hot summers because they repel mosquitos and other flying pests 🦟🦟🦟) ....

A virtual weekend 'Zoom' trip to the beautiful Île de Ré with lovely folks from the @sketchingfrance Facebook group. How incredible it is to have the technology to do this! I am so thankful for anything that keeps us connected. And on that note, the Île de Ré is only 19 miles long and 3 miles wide - it's connected to the mainland by a bridge that's almost 2 miles long. One of these days I'll sketch that too, but ideally on location 😉 🇫🇷

Easter Monday and an extra quiet day in lockdown France. I went to the end of the street to do a quick sketch with a pre-painted page. As I sketched there in my solitude it reminded me how much, over a year later (which feels more like 10), I miss meeting up at the village café with sketching friends 😔
On the upside, I am really enjoying the richness of these Sennelier watercolours 🎨🙂
